Instagram hashtags in 2026: the five hashtag limit and what works now
Instagram now allows up to five hashtags per post and Reel. What Instagram says about reach, why caption keywords matter more since Google indexes Instagram, and how to pick your five.
Short answer
Use up to five hashtags. Since December 2025 Instagram has been rolling out a limit of five hashtags per post and Reel. Instagram says fewer, more targeted hashtags work better than many generic ones, and that generic hashtags can even hurt a post. Hashtags are no longer the main way people find you: the words in your caption matter more, because since July 2025 Google and Bing index public posts from professional accounts, including the caption and the hashtags.
The rule: five hashtags
| Before | Now | |
|---|---|---|
| Hashtags per post or Reel | Up to 30 | Up to 5 |
| When | Rolling out from 18 December 2025 | |
| Instagram's reason | Fewer, targeted hashtags improve performance and people's experience |
Instagram's words: using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content's performance and people's experience on Instagram. Instagram's tips add that generic hashtags do not help content appear in places like Explore and could hurt its performance.
Do hashtags still grow your reach?
Not much. Instagram's head Adam Mosseri said in February 2025 that hashtags do not work to increase reach. Treat them as labels that tell Instagram and search engines what the post is about, not as a growth trick.
What matters more now: your caption in Google
- Since 10 July 2025, Google and Bing index public posts and Reels from professional accounts: Business, Creator and over 18.
- Posts uploaded from 1 January 2020 onward can appear.
- What gets indexed: the caption, alt text and hashtags, along with the image or video.
- Check it is on: Settings, Account privacy, Search engine indexing.
- So write the caption with the words people search, like the car model or the app name, and put them in the first line.
Instagram shows about 125 characters of a caption in the feed before the more button, so the first line has to carry the topic and the hook.
How I pick my five
This is my own method, not an Instagram rule. One hashtag each for:
- The exact topic or product, for example the car model.
- The wider category, for example electric cars.
- The place, if it matters, for example Dubai or UAE.
- The kind of content, for example a tutorial or a review.
- Your own series or name, so people can find the rest.
Skip generic tags that every account uses. Instagram says they do not help and can hurt.
