BYD apps: answers to the questions owners actually asked

Will apps work on my BYD? Do I need ADB? What about warranty and Netflix? Straight answers to the real questions from 1,455 comments on my BYD apps Reel, with sources.

Short answer

Whether apps install on a BYD screen depends on the model, the market version and the software version, so two cars of the same model can behave differently. The method in my Reel installs APK files from a USB stick on the screen and does not use ADB. BYD says unauthorised software is likely to affect the warranty, so check with your dealer first, and never watch video while driving.

Before you install anything

  • Check your warranty terms with the dealer or seller first.
  • Install only APK files from sources you trust, and review the permissions.
  • Do not change developer, region or security settings on the car.
  • Watch video only while parked.

Your questions

Will this work on my BYD?

It depends on the model, the market version and the software version. Two cars of the same model can run different software with different limits, so the only way to know is to try the USB method on your car. I tested it on a Leopard 5.

Do I need to enable ADB or developer mode?

No. The method in my Reel installs APK files from a USB stick through the screen. Some online guides use ADB, but it is a privileged interface into the car's electronics, some cars block it, and changing it may affect the warranty. I do not recommend it.

What if my car blocks installing apps?

Some cars restrict installs by region or software version, and those limits can return after the car checks in with the server. Do not try to bypass them. Ask your dealer whether there is an official way to get the app or feature.

Netflix is not working on my screen. Why?

Several viewers said Netflix did not work. Some apps are not made for car screens and may not run. I cannot confirm Netflix works on BYD screens, so it is not something I promise in the guide.

Will installing apps void my warranty?

BYD has said that installing unauthorised software is likely to affect the vehicle's warranty. Ask your dealer before you install anything.

Can I watch videos while driving?

No. It is a serious distraction. Manufacturer streaming apps usually only play while parked, but third party apps may not have that limit, so it is on you to use them only when parked.

Does it work on Jetour, MG, Icaur or ROX?

I have not tested other brands. Owners of these cars asked the same question, but their systems and rules are different, so check with your dealer.

Does the official Denza B5 need this at all?

Often not. The UAE launch report says the Denza B5 supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which brings maps, music and messages from your phone without installing anything.

Will I still get software updates?

Changing the car's system can affect the over the air updates it would otherwise receive. Installing an app from the screen is different from modifying the system, but if updates stop, ask your dealer.

I commented but did not get the link.

You do not need it. Every file and the full guide are on the BYD apps page on this site.
